It is often hard for an outsider to understand why a man who apparently has everything is compelled to risk it all for a romp in a hotel room with an anonymous one-night stand. And yet it happens all the time—famous men, with beautiful wives and a reputation to upkeep are caught with their metaphorical trousers around their ankles, splashed all over the supermarket tabloids. So what percentage of men cheat on their partners and why do they do it?
According to numerous studies carried out over the years, around 40% of men will cheat on their partner at least once in their life, which is slightly disheartening from the female perspective. Of course this is based on men being honest when asked, so in reality the figure may even be higher, which is even more depressing!
Why do men cheat?
It is easy to think that men have an excuse for cheating—after all, they are biologically programmed to spread their fertile seed and impregnate as many women as possible in order to ensure that the human race flourishes, right? Well I find that one difficult to swallow, so to speak, since the human race has evolved since then and men are no longer dragging their knuckles on the ground.
For many men, sex and love are two entirely different things and, unlike women, men are able to compartmentalise their emotions into convenient little boxes. At home they are the loving husband and devoted father, but with their lover they are able to break free from the shackles of domesticity and taste the excitement of their youth again.
The more likely reason why men cheat is that they enjoy sexual variety and no matter how much they love their primary partner—and disturbingly the majority of cheaters profess to love their partner very much—they cannot resist the thought of some uncomplicated no-strings sex with another woman.
What percentage of men cheat because the opportunities are easy to find?
A large percentage of men will be unfaithful to their partner simply because they can. The modern world, with its high level of technological gadgets, has made it incredibly easy for opportunist men to have some action on the side. There are loads of discrete websites where men can look for extra marital fun with like minded women, should they be so inclined.
What percentage of men cheat time and time again?
Succumbing to a moment of weakness on a business trip in a bland hotel is one thing, but why some men carry on with a multitude of different women over months or years, a la Tiger Woods, is difficult to understand for most people. What makes men behave in this way? Are they sex addicts who cannot control themselves in female company, or is there something deeper going on?
Many serial cheaters are high profile men. Men in the public eye are handed opportunity on a plate with women literally throwing themselves at them, with no regard for the fact the man might be married or in a relationship. So it is not long before the men begin to believe their own hype and think they are above the rest of us mere mortals—until the paparazzi catch them out and their wife dumps them.
